Yesterday, the Myrtle Beach community gathered to celebrate the remarkable life of Reverend Elizabeth Hemingway Bowen on her 70th birthday. Held at the Mary C. Canty Recreation Center, the celebration was a heartfelt tribute to a woman dedicated to service, resilience, and love.
Elizabeth, a Myrtle Beach native, is the founder S.C. Mothers Against Violence, Inc , a community organization in Myrtle Beach she began in honor of her late son, Tony Hemingway. Her unwavering dedication to the community has made her a beacon of hope and change in the region.
Guests shared stories from her childhood on Harlem Road, now known as Canal Street. Elizabeth shared vivid memories of growing up with her siblings, her tomboy adventures with her brothers, and the simple joys of making homemade toys, playing marbles, and catching meals by the quiet canal. Despite the challenges of growing up with limited resources, her childhood was rich with love, laughter, and life lessons that shaped her into the strong woman she is today.
In an emotional moment, Elizabeth reflected on her journey through life’s ups and downs. “There were times I didn’t know if I would live to see my 70th birthday,” she shared. “But thank you, Jesus, for bringing me through. Nobody can do me like you, Jesus.”
The celebration honored her milestone birthday and her incredible legacy of resilience, faith, and community impact. Guests enjoyed revisiting her inspiring journey through shared stories and photographs, capturing the spirit of a woman who has touched countless lives.
